in 1915, Carl Laemmle, the head of Universal Pictures, bought a 230 acre chicken ranch and pronounced the opening of Universal City which encompassed his Universal Motion Picture Studios and a company town to support his crew and their families. Today, Universal City is twice the size and includes Universal Studios, Universal Studios Tour and Theme Park, and Universal City Walk shopping, dining and entertainment center. –

In the 1920’s highly successful actor, director, producer Mack Sennett transformed a lettuce ranch into a state-of-the-art motion picture studio and facility. Later it became the Republic Pictures Studios and then was expanded to become the CBS Radford Studios.
